DJ PICADILLY INFO
Mambo - a classic of twentieth century dance music - is one of the most innovative developments of Cuban music. Prepared in Cuba and carried on in New York City by Cuban and Puertorican musicians, mambo was the start for an explosive fusion of Cuban rumba and son with North-American jazz. Unfortunately its seminal period coincided with World War II and preceded the development of high fidelity. So, the most original mambo never got broader recognition and its recordings are accessible only recently through digital reissues.
DJ Picadilly is a project of ethnomusicologist and composer Hans Kroier, which has as its aim the reactivation of old Latin classics for the dancefloor. Hans is into Cuban music since more than twenty years and has extensive experience with digital sound editing and mastering. For five years now he has been rummaging through the numerous re-releases of mambos, rumbas, plenas, etc., looking for pieces that are ahead of their time. Through careful selection, sound restoration and remastering he tries to bring their joyful and vital drive back to today´s dancefloors.
New promo mix available now:
„Funky Mambo" (Timewarp Mix)
In addition to some classic mambo-highlights from the New York scene of the forties, the mix centers on the Puerto Rico-Cuba-New Orleans axis: a risky cruise through the Anglo-Hispanic borderland to prove that funk was as style of Caribbean music - and mambo funky! It is a sound of many faces, but always hot and spicy, which culminates here in a driving dance mix.
