musical biography

- born in 1959 near Munich (Germany)
  into 'musical' family; early musical basic education
  early interest for jazz music; built first usable cardbord
  drumkit at age of 8 to play along with radio
- formal training: classical piano (10 years),
  violoncello (6 years, plus some years orchestra playing)

- from 1974 on practising jazz piano and improvisation,
  playing in different amateur groups and 'experimental'
  projects
- from 1978 on shifting gradually towards percussion
  as main instrument
  training in classical percussion (1 year) and in
  latin percussion (3 years, with John Brock,
  Reinhard Flatischler and Freddy Santiago)
  playing different kinds of 'ethnic' percussion
  in groups, most of them for 2 or more years:
  cuban rumba, samba batucada, bossa nova, balinese gamelan,
  amadinda-xylophone, arabian percussion, cuban batá
- studies in historical musicology (1980-82, Munich),
  comparative and systematic musicology (1982-90, Berlin)
  courses on minimal music by Dieter Schnebel (HdK)
  ethnomusicological research in Turkey and Cuba
  (MA on Cuban rumba, 1991)
  since then also writing on music-related topics
  (radio features, occasional articles and lectures)

  - during the eighties also experiences with all kinds of
  available music and audio technology in the studio project
  'bande son' (with Jürgen Lindemann, Martin Berghammer)

- from 1989 on creating film music for nature documentaries
  by developping a sound-oriented method of composition
  occasional sound design for animations, art videos etc.
  after finger injury decision to concentrate on sampling technology
  as main artistic medium.
  1991 first contact with dub and jungle in London
- 1995 initiating 'pickadelic' as idea and project name
  live-appearances with sampler/sequencer in clubs, galleries,
  at parties and festivals.
- 1997 signed contract with 'incoming!' label, followed by some releases
  album 'recyence' reflects sample-highlights from my own
  global musical archive
- 1998 exotica-inspired album 'tamtam fiction' (first version)
  remains unreleased and is presented only live
  various compositions using historic electronic sounds and
  micro-samples from 'incredible strange music'
  live set 'archaeolectrica' (including visuals)
- 2000 compiled by David Byrne for 'Blip Hop' compilation (Luaka Bop)
- since 2000 associated with 'moonray' label
  some releases and cooperations with 'pre fade listening' and 'chin chillaz'
- 1999 initiating 'picadilly' project for the remastering of mambo
  and other kinds of historic dance music
  since then occasional deejaying as 'dj picadilly'
  2001 mambo-research in Cuba; lecture in Havanna
- from 2001 on working with live-sampler and realtime mixing
  exploring jazz repertory for sounds and rare beats
- 2004 creating swing and jazz orientated 1 hour live set
  'all cats jammin', supported by the swing project 'jump for joy'
  live appearances with 'break a lick cooperation' (including
  vocals, saxophone and dj) in Berlin and Austria
- 2005 release of a reworked and extended version of 'tamtam fiction'
  on 'Inex music works' label
